Think I've still got some of the wheels and drill motors (and promotional stickers!) kicking about that I bought when the store was online last time (2006-ish?)
Those new drives look interesting though. Aluminium drill gearboxes? Contemplated looking at getting some of them made (as I'm getting fed up with the plastic ones) but never got round to it.
Did make a series of ali drillgearboxes in 2002.
After evaluation, the efford doesn't compare to the result.
Good to hear Jamie- can barely remember last time around, think it must've been 2007 but what seems like a long time ago regardless!
They're predominately Nylon 6, very tough but much easier to machine as well as being less dense affording a more voluminous and supportive enclosure. All details will be up on Friday!
The Plastic mount is very similar to a design I put together for Bitza 2. Although obviously no where near as well engineered.....
looks like ill be getting a few pairs of them then :)
Is the gearbox going to have a left and right version, that reverses the direction of rotation? To counter the fact that most drill motors are designed to spin one way faster than the other.
ill be ordering a pair of those from you ASAP, they look fantastic and i want something high quality so i dont have too keep replacing them :)

In response to PJ the motors are neutrally timed, they're 550 type motors not normally found in cheap drills.

Having been able to look at them in detail, they look like some very nice units. I'll be ordering a couple (to start with) when wages come through and see how they perform.
What's stopping that front bearing poping out? Circlip on the output shaft?

Re Dave: The bearings are press-fits (there's two, another on the hidden side of the Nylon front section), which is a more permanent solution in Nylon (as opposed to aluminium say) given its ability to deflect and maintain a compressive force on the outer bearing ring. They're not going anywhere basically, especially considering the lack of axial loads on them
And if you'e not sure, there are enough inserts to mount a thin plate in front of the bearing.
I'm waiting for the next month before ordering a set..
What off the shelf wheels are compatible with these motors? Or do you have to custom build them?

Would the gears fit Argos drill motors?
Possibly- they are the same size (with different styling) as gears from an Argos drill I bought three years ago, but as budget drills sometimes change design I can't say for sure.
Ah, thats useful (that the technobots wheels fit). Does anyone have a weight for those and what is the wheels profile? There is no dimensions besides diameter on the technobots site.
Where did you get Technobots from? If you mean Robochallenge I think the tyres are 25mm across and the weight would depend on the size of the tyre.
Yes, Robochallenge not technobots... sorry. So 25mm wide with a 100/75mm diameter.
The 100mm ones are in the area of 200grams each. Not sure about the 75mm ones, don't own any. :)
Just received the motor drives. My first impression is only positive :D
And for the price I don't think they will be bettered,
If you do the sums for two drill drives from Robo Challenge and the cost of two of these units,
I think these new motors could be the new standard in the Featherweight class

Wow, this is a really good range of products, but it might be a good idea to add the dimensions of the products, eg the diamiter of the wheels, but it's looking really good other than that

The diameters are in the product headings, about to add wheel masses though which I'd missed out.
Will give those new grippy wheels ago on Rover and Eric Jr and see how they compare to the Blue ones :)

Only potential issue I can see with the wheels is that having a single nut inserted may cause issues with strength and reliability. I know from having taken them to bits that the robochallenge wheels use a double nut to secure it to the drill shaft.
That's probably reasonable for 100mm+ wheels whose hubs are larger but for these there's not a great deal of space for two nuts. As it is each is heated to 220°C and pressed with ~1T force into the hub.
If the application allows it the wheel can be mounted 'backwards' onto the GR01 shaft if the off-nut side is part-bored to 12mm, providing greater resistance to radial loads. This would obstruct the motor's front mounting holes however as the wheel sits much closer to the bearing face. I will aim to put this into pictures by the new year.

Try not to go all the way up to the nut with the clearance hole, perhaps half-way though the wheel ought to be enough

At the current rate stocks of the GR01 are likely to run out within two weeks but will be replenished by the middle/end of January.
Any videos of the kits in action yet Ewan? Also noted on the website it says operating voltage upto 21v.... Do they get warm at 21? Ok for running on 6s lipo?
