Voltage regulation?
Hi ive just built my first ant (flipper) and made a voltage reulator for it as im gonna use 2 cel LiPo pack to power the thing.
Was wondering how u guys do with LiPo packs, i guess spinners use BEC function from the speedo but what about crushers and flippers?
Do you put the 8,4v (fully charged) straight into the reiever and push the robot untill it breaks?

The receiver needs a regulator of some form. Either the BEC in the speedo or a seperate regulator. 8.4v will generally kill a receiver!

Wouldnt 8.4v kill most servos as well?

I´ll use my regulator to give about 6v out I guess but im tempted to see any roboteers who got ants equipped with flippers or crushers who don´t use BEC, and how and what they do in case they use LiPos.
Im interested because i rarely read of anyone talking about using a regulator or building one when writing diaries, is it a bit uncommon to use LiPo with regulator in ants or have i missed out on the ants using it maybe?

Ah thank you, first link i see who shows someone building a regulator. complete with a scheme and everything :)

Voltage regulators are required for any servo driven bot. Take the one I just built for Shane for example: It uses 3 Park Flyer servos, which can (for short lengths of time) operate on 7.4v (a 2 cell lipo). The receiver (a Hitec feather) cannot. Ive rigged it so that the 3 servos get 7.4v power by putting the positive wire before the VR chip. the VR outut then goes to the RX, powering it with 6v (which it can handle). The negative (Black) and signal (White) wire from each servo goes to the RX, not carrying any voltage, and getting signal from the RX.
since most ants these days use motors and speedos, the speedo serves to power the RX via a BEC, usually 5v, so VRs have not been used much. They are still used in the remaining servo driven bots, Like shanes new one
PS: 600 posts !

ive never used a voltage regulator, and have never had a reciever fail on me. A good few servos, but never a reciever. I use a hitec feather and theyll happily take a fully charged 2 cell li-po. The GWS park HPF X servos cannot really handle 8.4v. I used them for drive (speed hacked) and on a flipper, and have lost about 3 of them in 5 events.
If i ever build ants again, ill defo be regulating them to 5v.
