Velociraptors Fanfic Tournament - Series 7!
Back in 2002, I noticed that everybody else on the forum seemed to be making their own fanfic tournaments - the old tradition of setting up a tournament and having everyone pitch in and write the fights was dying off, to be replaced with the tournament creators writing all the fights themselves. So on 1st October, I decided to join in, and create Velociraptors Fanfic Tournament!
Like real life Robot Wars, it was a very modest start. Only 16 robots participated, and one of the four people who entered them was me (the others being Tom Roper, Steven McGregor and Andy Jackson). The tournament ended on 9th November, with AJs Son Of Ripper as the champ, while Spin Dash and Spinverter got the silver and bronze respectively!
VFT2 (Nov 2002-Jan 2003) came soon afterwards - it was another simple single elimination tournament, with 8 people and 32 robots now entering! This allowed the competition to be even more brutal, with the impressive Disctruction Evo by Aaron Knight taking the gold, Spinverter Version Beta beating its previous record to come second, and Wedge 1 coming third!
After this, inspired by the Pussycat Tribute Tournament, I made VFT3 a big expansion more similar to current Robot Wars, with heats, semi finals and a grand final - and all following VFTs were the same! Aaron Knights Mass Disctruction Ultimate, one of the deadliest Vapourbots around, won VFT3 (Jan 2003 - dont know when it ended), then proved it wasnt a fluke by defending its title in VFT4 (Oct 2003 - Feb 2004)! Aaron withdrew from VFT5 (Mar-Aug 2004), however, leaving the road clear for a new champion, who turned out to Frank Goachers infamous The Disc 2! Then in VFT6 (Aug 2004-Sept 2005), we got another new champion who didnt take its opponents to pieces, but instead used a combination of flipping, good driving and using the arena obstacles to eliminate them - Steven McGregors Wedge Devolution, finally taking the trophy for Steven after trying for so long!
Its now three years since VFT began, and in that time there have been six tournaments of varying size. But now, Velociraptors Fanfic Tournament reaches its seventh series. If it returns, Wedge Devolution will have its work cut out to defend the title from 127 opponents, and with robots that have been well improved since VFT6 began, we can expect VFT7 to be host to some serious robot combat! The arena is set up, the sexy pit girl is ready for some interviewing, Ray the mascot has got his Velociraptor suit on and is preparing to warm up the crowd, so were ready to begin VELOCIRAPTORS FANFIC TOURNAMENT - SERIES 7!

Now here are the rules for entering:
01. I need 16 people to enter 8 robots each, Vapourbots or real. AT LEAST ONE OF YOUR ROBOTS MUST BE REAL. You cant enter a real robot if someones already entered an earlier or later version of the same robot or series of robots. You are allowed to reserve a place, but if you do, you have a time limit of one week to provide your stats. If you fail to do so, your spot will no longer be reserved, but you can still enter if you provide your stats and there are enough places left.
02. This information is required for Vapourbots (you can give more if you want):
Weight
Shape
Dimensions (l x w x h)
Speed
Locomotion (mention what its made of, eg: if its wheels, are they foam filled?)
Ground Clearance
Armour
Weaponry
Srimech
At least one strength
At least one weakness
03. The weight limits are 100kg for wheeled robots, 110kg for shufflers and tracked robots, and 150kg for walkers.
04. Clusterbots are allowed - there is a 4 part limit for them. A clusterbot is not eliminated unless all parts are immobilised, but the loss of one or more parts will count heavily against the clusterbot in Damage if the match goes to the judges.
05. Robots with passive or no weaponry are allowed, but I dont want too many. Flying robots are banned.
06. Robots with interchangable weaponry are allowed. You must say when you first give your stats that your robot has interchangable weaponry, and what those weapons are. If after giving your stats, you come up with a new interchangable weapon you didnt mention before, or change one you did mention, the new weapon or change cannot be used.
07. Basic Robot Wars rules on what is and isnt allowed apply to anything I havent mentioned.
Dave Weston has already reserved a spot, so thats 15 spots left if he gets his stats in within a week.
The tournament will work like VFT6 and RW7 (16 heats, each with 2 Round 1 four-robot melees from which 2 robots go through).
A robot is considered KOd if it is not moving for 30 seconds, if it is pitted, or if it is flipped and cannot selfright. If a robot is propped against the wall, it does not count as immobile and if it isnt freed, the match will be paused so it can be.
If two robots are immobilised at the same time by being flipped or being pitted, they will be righted and the match will continue. If one stops moving and the other is flipped or pitted, the flipped/pitted one wins if it is still capable of movement when righted. If both stop moving, a judges decision decides it.
In judges decisions, the robots are marked on Aggression, Damage, Strategy, Style, Control and Dominance. Each robot is marked out of ten for each category, more like RW decisions, rather than the previous decisions where points were shared appropriately. The scores for each category is then multiplied based on how important the category is - Dominance x 6, Damage x 5, Aggression x 4, Control x 3, Strategy x 2, Style x 1. If the score is even, the robot who came higher in more categories wins. If both robots performed equally category-wise, it will be put to the vote amongst readers.
A big change for VFT7 is that the robots will no longer just be fighting each other. Theyll also be able to fight a team of seven House Robots! (Well, not all at once - therell only be two in each fight.) Say hello to Assassinator, Drilla Killa Ultimate, Horcrux, King Cobra, The Martian, Ultimate Snakebite and Megaraptor!
ASSASSINATOR
Weight: 125kg
Shape: Box, propelled by tracks, with a domed top. The dome has two glowing red eyes on it.
Armour: 7mm titanium
Weaponry: At both the front and rear are two pneumatic spikes for stabbing at opponents, and connected to the dome is a pickaxe that comes down at the front.
DRILLA KILLA ULTIMATE
Weight: 120kg
Shape: Tornado style invertable box, with a wedge at the front, six wheel drive, and pincers at the front. The front sides each have an eye and the side of a mouth with sharp teeth painted on them, while the rest of the mouth is painted across the wedge.
Armour: 6mm Hardox
Weaponry: At the front are pneumatic pincers that grab and clutch other robots. Inside the wedge at the front are three large diamond tipped retractable drills, that are usually used to poke into a grabbed robot. At the rear is a particularly large cone shaped drill (like the one on the Battlebot Snake) used for ramming into anyone that strays too close.
HORCRUX
Weight: 125kg
Shape: Wedge with rounded back. There is an evil looking face painted on the flipper, with red LED eyes.
Armour: 6mm titanium on top of 5mm polycarbonate
Weaponry: The wedge is a powerful pneumatic flipper. At the rear is a Fluffy style spinning horizontal double axe.
KING COBRA
Weight: 125kg
Shape: Square box with sloping sides, and a threatening cobra head poking out of the top. 3D aesthetic additions to the box make it look like the cobra is coiled around it
Armour: 5mm Hardox
Weaponry: On either side of the cobra head is a pneumatic axe with a Terrorhurtz style blade, both independently controlled and painted to look like snakes.
THE MARTIAN
Weight: 140kg
Shape: Like a Martian tripod machine from The War Of The Worlds* with an egg shaped body, two merciless green eyes at the front and three legs, but unlike the Fighting Machines, its body is hung close to the ground, and its legs are held up off the ground - it uses a 2 wheel drive rather than the legs to move.
Armour: 6mm titanium
Weaponry: Rather than a Heat Ray, The Martian has a flamethrower positioned at the front. Its two front legs (which are static) have vertical steel saw blades attached, and the back leg is an electrically powered lifter.
*I should point out that my primary source on WOTW is the Jeff Wayne musical version and the images provided with it, since I havent read the book or seen the movie. Look up images from Jeff Waynes The War Of The Worlds on Google to get an idea of what The Martian looks like.
ULTIMATE SNAKEBITE
Weight: 135kg
Shape: Most of the robots length consists of a wedge that opens up horizontally down the middle like a jaw - at the rear is a box shape. The two wheels are on either side of the box shape, protected by guards. The wedge is painted to look like a snakes head.
Armour: 4mm Hardox
Weaponry: The wedge opens hydraulically - it can act as a lifter and a clamping jaw. There are steel teeth inside the jaw that fold away when it is closed and come down when it opens, so they can cause damage when it clamps. At the box bit of the rear is a vertical flywheel.
MEGARAPTOR
Weight: 250kg
Shape: Like a Velociraptor in a sitting position, with a static scoop at the front, and two moving arms with claws (similar to Mr Psychos) on either side of the scoop. It moves using four wheels underneath it.
Armour: 6mm titanium on top of 8mm polycarbonate
Weaponry: The arms have hydraulic claws that pick up and crush any unlucky robots that come too close - they are not independently controlled and come down at the same time. The static scoop can shove, and at the rear is a pneumatic axe with a Beta style hammer (supposed to be Megaraptors tail).
The arena is a large box surrounded by thick Lexan (so still no OOTAs) and a non magnetic metal floor.
*In the northeast corner and the southwest corner are the CPZs - enter those, and the House Robots are free to have a go at you!
*In the centre of the west wall is the pit release, which opens the pit in the northwest corner for 10 seconds. The pit is not right up against the two walls, but a short distance away from them. Hopefully this will make pitting a little more difficult.
*In the southeast corner is the trusty horizontal arena disc!
*In the centre of the southern half of the arena is a new arena flipper. This comes into action if a robot is on top of it for more than 5 seconds, or if an immobilised robot is placed on it, for a bit of fun!
Once again, in between the second semi final and the grand final we will have the side events!
*Making a return is the Annihilator event! As with last time, nine VFT entrants enter two robots. There will be six three robot Mayhems, and one robot goes through from each into the main Annihilator.
*The Challenge Belt is also returning, with Wedga Revo as the current Belt Holder, so hopefully AJ will enter Wedga or one of its descendants! It doesnt matter how many people enter the event, but each can only enter one robot.
* With a new team of House Robots, were having a House Robot Rebellion! Again, any number of people can enter, but only one robot each. The entrants will be divided into teams, depending on how many enter, and each team will fight four randomly selected HRs in the arena!
*And for the first time, VFT will be holding events for those robots that arent heavyweights! Yes, were having little events for five other weight categories:
Antweights (100-150g; 125-225g for walkers)
Featherweights (4-12kg; 4-18kg for walkers)
Lightweights (12-35kg; 18-52kg for walkers)
Middleweights (35-60kg; 52-90kg for walkers)
Superheavyweights (101-150kg; 151-200kg for walkers)
Eight robots (Vapour or real) can be entered in each weight class - each person can only enter one robot in each weight class. If a weight class doesnt have enough entrants, I will enter realies into it.
You must have entered VFT7 to enter the side events, and if you enter the Annihilator, Challenge Belt or HRR, your entrant (s) must have also been entered in VFT7 (this of course does not apply to the different weight events). You cannot enter any one robot in more than one event.
I think thats everything, so please enter!
Velociraptors Fanfic Tournament - Series 7!
Flaming Hell
Weight: 100kg
Dimensions: 90x90x60 cm
Weapon: a triangular spinning cage with 3 sharpened bot openers on each end, weighing 5kg each, spinning at 4000 RPM, powered by a Lemco on 36v
Power: 2x Bosch 750 motors at 24v (its been made so that the cage motor gets 36v but the drive only gets 24, as the drive is ok as it is on 24V)
Shape: circular base with triangular cage atop
Speed: 15mph
Drive power: 4bph
Notes: small electric actuators in the rotor arms in order to self right. They have been shock proofed so that the weapon impact will not bust them, and the cage spins 2mm from the ground, but to avoid doing a Mauler, the 4 wheels are at the far corners of the base to increase stability, and bearings added to the outer shell under the cage that go along runners on the cage keep the cage from deviating
Armour: 3mm titainium
Wheel Type - 4 small wheelbarrow type wheels (no need for great traction)
Hell Machine
Mass - 100kg
Weapons - Powerful axe and rear lifting arm
Dimensions - 140x100x60
Speed - 15mph
Turning Circle - 0m
Ground clearance - practically 0
Wheel Type - Go-kart
Body Shape - scoop fronted, wedged back
Armour - 8mm Grade 5 Titainum
Colour - Black with flame face on scoop and name in blood writing on side, devil head on rear wedge
Strengths - Enormous pushing power, EXTREMELY powerful axe, relentless in attacking (until a robot is immobile)
Weakness: Dislikes spinners, doesnt like weapons that use carbon
Notes: If on the ropes in a match, the front eyes will light up blood red and HM will throw absolutly everything its got at its opponent
Name: Sheer Hell
Weight: 100kg
Dimensions: 150cm x 80cm x 120cm
Shape: low angled box (see profile)
Weapons: a front mounted Horizontal spinning disc and a rear mounted verticl spinning disc, both running at 4000rpm and delivering a blow of 75kj
Top Speed: 8mph
Armour: 5mm Titainium
Srimech: powerful electric arms mounter on the top
Strengths: devestating weapons
Weakness: carbon based weapons
Notes: will NEVER turn the vertical flywheel into an opponent as it will throw SH over. Also, counter-acting discs (vert and horizontal) will keep it stable, and if it is flipped, it does a funny jig in the air before coming down, most of the time, right way up
Name: Flipping Hell
Dimensions: 120cm x 80cm x 40cm
Weight: 100kg
Shape: steep wedge front, elongated wedged tail (not used as a weapon)
Weapon: 1000psi 2 pivot pneumatic flipper that can generate enough momentum and forrce to throw a 100kg robot 25ft up and 20ft across
Top speed: 18mph
Armour: 6mm aliminium and steel alloy
Strengths: Can win with one weapon shot
Weakness: None
Notes: 4 wheels, the rear two of which are Razer type, so the flipper is always facing its opponent
Name: Jaws of Hell
Weight: 100kg
Dimensions (LWH): 130 x 100 x 25 cm
Body shape: Tornado shaped, but with 6 wheels
Weapons: a hydraulic tearer. The idea is that the large blade that is edged on both sides punctures the armour of an opponent, and a 3000psi hydraulic ram separates them, causing a huge tear in the armour. The edge is carbon tipped, so Titanium is not even there as far as Im concerned.
Power: a pair of LEM 130s on 36v running through a Storm 2 transmission (with 6 vulcalon wheels, with small screws in them for that little extra)
Armour: 4mm Hardox and 2mm stainless steel
Srimech: invertible
Speed: 27mph
Strengths: vicious weapon
Weakness: Unique weapon, may be mis-understood
Name: Helliant
Weight:100kg
Dimensions: 100 x 100 x 35 cm
Shape: Low wedge, rounded back
Weapons: A 750 PSI pneumatic arm that is mainly for self righting but can be used as a weapon, and a set of 3 Kill Saws at the back. The Kill Saws four, 20 inch, carbide tipped, SystiMatic saw blades. The blades are powered by a 48 volt, 3.5 horse power motor and can shred titanium and many other things too.
GC: 0mm at the front, 1mm the rest of the way
Wheels: go-karts
Power: a pair of Bosch 750s on 36v, whereas the weapon is on 48v
Speed: 18mph
Armour: 2mm stainless steel and 4mm aluminium
Strengths: rip-roaring weapon
Weakness: iffy armour
Name: All Hell
Weight: 100kg
Dimensions: 100 x 100 x 50cm
Shape: Vortex, but without the motor sticking out the back
Weapons: A 27kg outer-rim weighted steel vertical flywheel, Powered by a B&S motor at 48v and run through a 40:1 ratio chain and sprocket transmission. The disc runs at 3500RPM but packs a 79Kj wallop (I worked it out; it€™s not that dissimilar from Matildas tail disc).
GC: 3mm all the way around
Wheels: 2 x Vulcanised Aluminium hubs
Power: a pair of Bosch 750 watts motors running on 36v (Like Flaming hell, wired so the drive gets less and the weapon gets more) running through a 10:1 ratio gearbox
Speed: 12MPH
Armour: 6mm Stainless Steel
Colour: Black, with pentagrams and demon faces painted in random places
Strengths: Devastating Weapon
Weakness: No srimech as such, but can run on the disc, which is then thrown into reverse which causes the robot to flip over, Stinger Style. Tipped right way up
As for a real robot, Id like to enter Razer
Velociraptors Fanfic Tournament - Series 7!
Just noticed about other weights, so:
MW:
Hell Fire
Weight: 50kg
Dimensions: 120x110x40cm
Shape: low slung wedge
Weapons: Powerful pneumatic flipping arm that has a plate that runs the width of the front, that can throw 75kg 3 feet or so no problem, and can, flip 100kg, but not too high, and a rear Pussycat style Saw, that spins at 4000rpm, and has carbon tipped teeth to cope with titanium.
Top Speed: 25mph
Transmission: a pair of Mag C40€™s on 24v NiMH€™s running through a really simple transmission, but a reliable one due to features to keep the chain on.
Amour: 4mm Ali and steel alloy and 2 mm of stainless steel on top
Strengths: Very manoeuvrable and fast, generally very easy to control
Weakness: Exposed outer wheels
Ground Clearance: 0 at the front, 5cm at the back, varying from 0 to 4.5 at the sides (wedge goes up)
Turning Circle: 0cm (its turning is very nimble)
Notes: Hell Fire is extremely manoeuvrable because it has 2 sets of wheels on the same axle, meaning that it€™s incredibly stable, and can turn on a penny, and can still run even with outer wheels ripped off
LW:
Name: Hell Hound
Weight: 25kg
Dimensions (LxWxH): 60x50x30cm
Shape: scooped front, rectangular body, rounded back
Weapons: 2 conjoined Pincer type crushing jaws with a small hydraulic ram powering each, producing a 1 and 1/2 tonne crushing force
Colour: mainly black, but with Rotweiler features all over the body
Speed: 15MPH
Transmission: a pair of Bosch 400€™s on 24v running through a simple 6:1 ratio gearbox
Armour:1mm stainless steel and 1mm Ali/steel alloy (tough enough for LWs)
Srimech: cable pulled legs from out the side (like a dog cocking his leg to do his business) and a cable pulled tail to self right when its on its head
GC: 0 at the scoop, 2mm the rest of the way
Turning circle: 0cm
Strengths: Power of weapon
Weakness: slow self righter (still effective mind)
Notes: New NBSFL LW champ
FW:
Name: Hells Angel
Weight: 12kg
Dimensions: 59 x 45 x 15 cm
Shape: Scoop front, rectangle body, wedged rear end
Weapons: a car radiator fan motor powered axe, drilled for lightness, but with still a heavy axe head, with a wallop power of about 500kg
Transmission:2x 12v 3000mA Ni-cads powering Ali protected Challenger drill motors attached directly to the compound rubber wheels (those popular blue wheels you see on many FW), which are studded with screws pointing out (like those on Chaos 2)
Speed: 12 MPH
GC: 2mm all around, 0 at the scoop end
Srimech: The axe, the weight of which pulls it over so it cannot rest on its side. Make SURE you remember that.
Armour: 2.5mm mild steel and 3mm ali on the sides, 6mm aluminium elsewhere
Strengths: The axe
Weakness: the armour may not stand up to strong FW spinners, but should prove good enough
Name: Baby Hell
Weight: 150g
Shape: scooped front, rectangle body, wedged back end
Drive: Modified 9g NAROTECH servos, like those used in Anty B powered by a 25g NiMh 4.8v cell
Weapon: A modified NAROTECH servo powered axe that can go through CD casing in 1 shot. The axe is powerful enough to self right the robot.
Armour: Pullback Tornado chassis with the scoop on the front.
Wheels: The ones from the Tornado pullback (very grippy), but I use only the rear two because the front space was needed for the axe and battery
Strength: power of axe
Weakness: strength of armour can cause if to fly acros ring when fighting spinners
Notes: Due to rear wheels, scoop is lower to the floor than regular Tornado Pullback
