Advice and recommendations on these components.

I've finalised my line up for my robot and this is what I've came up with. I probably won't enter it into combat until further testing and improvement. Please tell me if this line up won't work (I don't care too much about how good it'll be in a competition just yet) I just purely want to know if it will run okay with these components. Also, please suggest alternatives, preferably cheap and can be bought from Hobbyking. Switches and removable links will come later, possibly in a build diary. I'm just buying parts for now.

I'm not getting a LiPo for now because i'd need to buy a special charger. Mainly, though, these are slightly safer and cheaper.

The ESC you selected (Brushless Speed controller) don't match your motors (Brushed motor).

Sorry, yes. I didn't read it properly. I've changed it to the Hobbyking red brick ESC. It was one of the only brushed ESCs I could find there. I'm still very confused when it comes to speed controllers, I just can't seem to get my head round them, and today I just found out about programming. To be honest, getting the right speed controllers has been what's holding this all up.

Where did it say the Red Brick was for brushed? I can't seem to find any mention of it, and given the three wires sticking out, it looks brushless to me. Most people used pre-modified brushed BotBitz ESCs from Ranglebox, though you can buy the TZ85 straight from Hobby king and modify it yourself (not too hard, I've done it). https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-...w-5a-sbec.html Yeah with the switchover to brushless motors in almost all RC equipment, ESCs for brushed motors are getting very difficult to find, especially for our application. I know there are some different ones still on sale, but I think the best bang for your buck tends to be the modified TZ85.

I would be careful about using that battery too. Drill batteries ate lithium ion rather than Lithium-polymer so they don't much like the kinds of high discharge bursts they get put through with robotics. You might be better getting a 3cell (3s) Lipo from hobby king. It shouldn't cost any more than your current plan for the battery and might even give you a bit more power for the weight

Both those batteries are 99% likely to be the same type in either drill so aren't competition legal.

Henry, those batteries would most likely be fine, they afterall aren't powering anything other than what they are meant to power. As an extra bit Lithium Polymer IS a type of Lithium Ion battery. The particular chemistry used in drills is slightly different being LiNiMnCoO2 which is a safer variant. Also his plan of using those batteries is free but I agree that a 3S LiPo would be a better choice.

Ah I see what you mean Alex. I got my information from a book on combat robot building but given that it's nearly as old as I am so it's probably out of date!
