Speed controller question - Ampage capacity

Afternoon folks. I have a speed controller question for Flat Damon.

I am looking at 12V drill motors which draw ~5.3A and I have a choice of dual motor controllers with 10A, 15A or 30A continuous capacity.

I found this guide and it says the motor will only draw what it needs so if more is available then it won't matter (burst Ampage is within limits on them all too). http://www.robotshop.com/blog/en/how...ontroller-3695 .

I'd rather get the most powerful for future proofing (and better heatsinking), but no point if it blows up motors more often.

Is there a working range to this principle? The example in that articles suggests a 5amp board for a 350 mA motor so it seems like 5.3A on a 15 or 30 would be ok?

Personally, even with drill motors I have used hacked TZ85A. They are robust and small
You can buy them off Ranglebox pre-hacked or you can do it yourself by reflashing the firmware

Thanks. Two of those would be a bit out of my price range atm, but it might be an option later on.

That's good though - if the Ranglebox at 85 still fits a 5a motor then the 30 one will too.

If you're just using drill motors, the Ranglebox 30A ones will be fine.

The Tz85s are in all reality a 30 amp controller. There's no way in hell one would manage 85amps continuously.

Data from external testing on them puts them at 40A for 3 minutes. ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/ehfqvwn77n...anual.pdf?dl=0 ), however it is still waay higher than the average current draw from most feather drive systems.
