Brushless DC Speed Controllers for Heavyweights

I've used a few Roboteq controllers for industrial applications - mostly VBL2360's, but they are rather expensive at £700 or so for a 2 channel, 60A continuous rating. They also only operate in Sensored mode, which limits their top speed rather. Most bike type controller start off sensored then switch to sensorless above a certain rpm - to give a better stall torque / top speed.

Most bike controllers 'Auto Learn' the configuration of the Hall sensors - but this means you cannot simply swap two phases (windings and Hall sensors) to reverse as they realise something has changed then run badly until it re-learns.

Are there any other lower cost, reversible controllers that have met with success?

While still technically prototypes, these VESC have already seen use in Robot Wars with Pulsar, and given we had very little setup time they worked a treat. With more time to set the software up for different drive configurations they are a very capable little controller.
