Introduction and Forum Thread advice.

Hi All,

Am new around these parts and thought I would drop a quick message in here introducing myself and my combat robot plans.

In the Hertfordshire area(Stevenage/Hitchin) anyone else local to me?

Been a long time follower, lover of Robot wars and now Battle Bots filling the gap until Robot wars UK is aired…

Always wanted to build robots from an early age but never really was in the right place. Now aged 28(29 on Friday! Lol) I have my little workshop built and am in a place where I can start introducing some robots into my life lol.

First things first. Something simple…. A Beetle weight (although I am itching to use them 24v Wheelchair motors!!)

What is the usual process around here for new bots? Shall I create a build log and use that for all my questions? Id like to list out my bits and get an opinion on them without having ANOTHER thread talking about 12v 1000RPM motor and wheel combination in the beetle weight forum.

Hi,

Hitchin Hackspace (http://hackhitchin.org.uk/) is close to you. I know that they do some combat robot stuff and are involved in an inter-hackspace competition each year.

Whats the usual rules around here regarding listing potential parts for my upcoming bot and getting advice and feedback on the parts selection and the build process? Shall I do a build Diary post and use that to house all my questions related to my new bot?(first ever bot)

Hey TornTech, welcome to the forums! There are generic threads all over the forum for asking different types of questions, but sometimes it can be difficult to find them. It's usually a good idea to try the search box in the top-right, but if you can't find what you need, a lot of people tend to, as you say, make their own build diary thread that others can follow and give advice on. If you have a general idea in mind, I'd recommend you start a build diary and ask questions there. I know quite a few people read them often, including me (though I'm still a noob at this).

Just a bit of advice, you might want to title your build thread something like "Team X Builds" or "<Person>'s Robots" (rather than "<robot name> Build Diary"), since you may end up changing the name of your robot, or using the same one for future projects too. I did this, and I wish I'd have made it a bit more general at this point, since my robot has a different name now. :P Hopefully that made sense, and happy building!

Hey, I'm from Cambridge, and I'm really friendly with the robot guys from Hitchin. If you can, come over to Makespace in Cambridge, we've got better equipment than Hitchin and I can show you my beetle and feather so you can get an idea of sizes.

hey! yay! local people! :) iv sent the Hitchin Makerspace a message on Twitter, might try and get down to their Space on Monday night.

Your maker space looks amazing!! I might have to tap you up on the offer to come and visit, however im not driving ATM so getting there on a regular basis is going to make it pretty hard to become a member, or at least a cost effective member! Which is a pain, as id love the resources on offer!
