Thread: ESC recommendations

Passive cooling is better than fans.
But if you add a heatsink, look it at the other way around. Add the ESC to the heatsink.

Depends on surface area and total mass. Color and material are also nice to know.

For our application black anodised aluminium is the best option.

But to give you an idea. In the Sidewinder , the heatsink was 2 smallish ali blocks bolted to the ali casing.

It's interesting that experienced Roboteers are against fan cooled
ESC's and there are more expensive fan cooled ESC's on the market
    uk/vyper-120a-dc-motor-controller.html at £200 + so I guess they
are not fit for purpose either?.
Whats most intriguing is that team Katch have a heavyweight Robot
up and running/ driving around with a relatively cheap ESC and unlike
myself-it didn't go bang when they plugged it in (different ESC ) and
also you have to applaud the testing at higher voltages.
And if you do requests can you try on 2 lipo 4s in series perhaps trying
to tow a car-I can loan you the batteries and if it's ok with this, mine
will be on order the next day.

I think they have enough experience to be openly concerned for other builders. Who have not yet put up cash..

I on the other hand already spent the cash so I do need to overcome the potential issues so help is more useful now.

The offer for lipo is cool . what area are you in Colin.

The Vyper uses a actual heatsink where the Cytron just blows onto the mosfets.

I also believe the Vyper has bean used in combat bots both into the US and UK. (I might incorrect on this)

Thank's for the info on the vyper Mark, but it's still a fan cooler
so I assume it's vunerable to Combat impacts.

I have just noticed your location down in somerset there Team
Katch (member first name required) -I'm up north of York so
popping round with the lipos may be impracticable but I'm
    very interested in this controller.
What is the highest voltage you have put into the ESC and
do you have any issues with sparking when you connect to batteries ?

I am sure Foxic uses them when I last saw the robot, so definitely in the UK at the very least.

48v was tried esc was fine but motors didn' like it... I'll try my lipo when they arrive

The fans on the Vyper (and Victors ) still are vurnable.

Some of the ESC's have them to boost performance further (increased running time with heavy loads), others just use them as a pure replacement for a heatsink.

The "pure" heatsink replacements ain't good in my opinion. Already to much to go wrong in our machines, we shouldn't add more.
