Thread: Aluminium grades; 5083 O vs 6082 T6

Question. I'm about to build the welded aluminium shell for my feather, but I have a choice between either '5083 O' or '6082 T6' ally. Which one would be the better option?
From what I understand, 6082 T6 is stronger as a material but weakens significantly by welding, I'm just not sure whether it reaches a point where it becomes weaker than 5083 O.

Hi Danny, I am very new to robot wars myself, presently building a heavy weight for the next series (fingers crossed). Over the last 20yrs I have studied the robots and types of materials used. From what I can make out and reading / listening to advise on robot builds it all depends on the opponents weaponry. I am currently laminating my shell with different materials which hopefully will give an all round protection (time will tell). Maybe you could do the same with your choice of materials. Think of plywood against solid board. The ply wood always win on strength. Hope this helps, good luck.

    5083 O https://www.makeitfrom.com/material-...083-O-Aluminum

However for armour for a feather HDPE is the go too as it is cheap, eat up energy (look at Gabriel vs Carbide) light and way easier to build with.

metals, Ti is also a good choice if you got the money and the stronger grade Au also is useful (7075 or 2024) if used in a corret manner. HARDOX is great if can get into your weight budget
