Thread: Ram position

I was just reading shootys thread and have a question about something he says. I didn't want to hijack that thread so thought I'd ask on a new one.

'Without a vertically mounted ram, the machine will lose power out of it's flip'

Is that true? My ram is horizontal, attached to a bar thats hinged at the back, as the ram extends it rotates upwards raising the bar. The ram is attached closer to the tip than the hinge.

Am I going to lose a lot of power this way compared to if I mounted a ram vertically?

It won't be as effecient as the ram has to change it's orientation during the flip however with such a small ram, you need it to be closer to the tip of the flipper anyway. Trying to mount that vertically close to the hinge would likely result in it not being able to open.
