Thread: Reverse/Left hand threaded bolts

  1. #1
I'm after about 20 of these guys. M5 x 25mm left hand thread screws. Preferably countersunk variety but not hugely fussy.

I can find some suppliers but they're nearly all a ripoff so for myself and the benefit of others where can these be sourced from?

Update: My supplier can get them and they will email me a quote for 25mm 30 and 35mm long ones and will update as soon as he lets me know. Be monday.

Hi Shakey, Take a look at these:

Had update from our work suppliers...

The cost of the bolts for 100 25mm, 100 30mm and 100 35mm bolts came to a price of around £1400, as these are usually custom made to order. This was a quote from a very large supplier too. I guess thats the reason they cost so much!

Im going to get an M5 lh die and machine my own from M6 bolts i think...
Will see if i can do it and maybe have some to sell...

I think the reason they cost so much would be the fact that they're just not standard products, plus, iirc, you have to change the helix angle on left hand threads by a tiny amount (so the thread leans the other way).
If you've got access to a lathe though, they shouldn't be too hard to make a load of. Get some M8 countersunk bolts, take the threads off them and then proceed as below:

If you are going to make some, I may very well need some. lost two of mine. with the £8 p&p from Germany or waiting 2months for what might be the right size from Hong Kong. or I might just go buy two new cordless drills for the same price (if I can find the right one).

I am going to make some on Monday, will see ho long it takes me to make them, and can calculate a price.

What sort of lengths are people looking for?

I made a couple on the lathe but time wise, I am just going to use the die otherwise it will cost too much time wise.

My stock ones are m5, 20mm long. But want a it longer 30mm or longer, so I can put some washers on. I've ordered two new drills for £10 each. Not the same as the ones I already have so might not fit. But even if they do I will need spares as I'm loosing or breaking everything at the moment!!

    Hi All,

I am able to make these bolts now with an M5 nut welded or 'silver soldered' (not standard electronic soldering but the really really good stuff!) to the end, so would be a hex shape nut to tighten in the LH thread.

What lengths do people want and i shall make some up.

I am able to make these bolts as shown on my flickr stream:

Price wise i need to work that out as its properly silver soldered. Will look to see if i can weld them too to reduce potential costs.
