There was a great line from Bobs burgers which fits this situation. At one point the character Teddy says, "If I don't value my time Bob then why should anyone else?". Simple answer is, yes you should ask for something if your time is important to you. There is always the chance they will go elsewhere but then how badly do you want it on the tv?

I agree with Gary, if you value your time then ask to be paid. Just charge them your usual daily rate.

If Channel 4 thinks your efforts are worth broadcasting, then it is worth paying for your time and effort. We do projects for Dutch TV and movies from time to time and we don't do that "for the exposure", it is a small source of revenue.

Wil Wheaton had a good article about this, it applies to all artisans.

Yes you should charge them a fee, nothing extortionate but what you will loose out on if you don't do your day's work.
TV companies will always try and get things for free and cheap where possible which has led to those expectations sadly.
