Beetleweight Brawl 2018 (unofficial thread)

Hi All!

Got my confirmation that i shall be participating in the Brawl in Bristol (not quite the thriller in manila but hey!) which is super exciting and i cant wait! My entry Batteries Not Included is almost done really, just need to tweak a few things. One of those tweaks is an LED for the on switch. I know i need to put in a fuse before the LED but im unsure what to get, any help?

On a side note, the shell of my robot is covered in stickers so if any teams/company's out there want to donate to the cause and get some free advertising either PM me and ill give you an address to send to or bring them on the day!

Theres 3 main ways of doing it.

Put a fuse in the line, put a blade fuse and holder in the line, or use fuse wire on the link connector.

Oh btw - "LED for the on switch" - remember it needs to be a removable link due to safety

I was thinking about how to add a light easily. I came across this if your power is 12V or under it would work out the box. I have seen light strips on EBay too that claim to have built in resistors.

TBH, the robotshop LED would be enough though do make sure it is contrast to the background panel if it isn't bright enough. For ease of maintenance, I put in a blade fuse with holder into my Featherweight and that does the job fine. It'll be the sort of thing I'll use in Shu! when I am there... need to get it built first. :P

Just to confirm my limited Electronics knowledge ( it was a while ago ok ) if you ran two of those LED strips in parallel it would require 24v to power it or am I mistaken.

You have parallel and series the wrong way.

2 in series wants 24v (where the negative of one is wired to the positive of the next). 2 in parallel will want 12v.

Great might get two of those LED strips + some more wheels for my feather

Actually, it does have a fuse as a removable link which is a good point! And that happens to be a blade fuse. I like the idea of the LD Strip though, would be pretty cool!

Will probs tidy it up a bit as all things arent in there final positions but ill post a pic or two sometime.

Hey all, having some problems with my brushless motors and need some help. I've bought some turnigy brushless motors and ive hooked them up to a brushless esc (obviously) but the motor just makes a beeping sound at me. Any ideas?

What sort of motors and ESCs are we talking about here?

turnigy 22260 3000kv 650v and hobbyking 60a sbec

Sure it is the motor beeping? More likely to be the ESC (not clued up on this Brushless tech yet so could very well be wrong :P). The ESC manual suggests that there is no throttle signal being received (1 beep followed by a pause).

you sir, are a genius. didn't know there was a manual, just found it. Lemme have a look as its not that type of beeping, its a really quick one

its something to do with the throttle not being in the lowest position, will try to find the correct channel and mix. Problem solving people!

From the manual, looks to be that you need to reset the throttle position and set the pull rod to the lowest position.

Is 60a the recommendation for those motor's? I've found Afro ESC's are pretty bomb proof but they only go up to 30a but with the rounds only being 2 minute's, heat might not be to much of an issue.

Nah, its a bit of a long story. Ive got a pair of 30a also and there absolutely fine. Ive heard good things about afro's so lemme know how you get on!

I use the 12a for my drive I only have 30a for my weapon motor which in the last even run between 70-100% during fights. You'll see for yourself come the 10th no need to let you know ;)

just the thought of a spinner is threatening enough :P i just want to meet people, have some fun and see some good fights. Not fussed about getting smashed lol

Agreed, you'll definitely see some good matches. Only 11 more days now until the event... I really need to tidy up the last little bits and pieces on Shu!

Hi guys, there's a little (and i mean little) alan key that tightens up the grub screw that holds the polualu hubs to the shaft of my motors... however... said key has vanished into thin air which means i cant tighten my hubs! if anyone has one of these or similar do you mind being a hero and bringing it on Saturday? Would be much much appreciated. Ta!

Do you have a link to the hubs being used?

I've got another lifting arm made that should hopefully negate spinners (hopefully) and a third one in progress specifically for the Nuts event. ;)

Myself and couple of other will be bringing and arrangement of tiny alan keys. We will definitely have some for m3 grub screws.

Well that was an excellent day. Plenty of weird and wonderful creations on display and some excellent bouts. Many thanks to the folks running the event and the UWE for having us. I wish Shu!'s lifting arm motor hadn't broke during the fight with Crabsoluetly Clawful but never mind. :P

Thank you also to all the really wonderful, knowledgeable and friendly people i met that really made the day special. I've never known a community like it and its genuinely 50% the reason i want to go back and put myself through it all again! Also a big thanks to K2 for going easy on me in the first fight! I appreciate it! :proud: I think we can all agree its the best upturned ice scoop on the beetleweight circuit at the moment... Now where did i put my stickers?
