    That will require a bit of playing/experimenting about with but in my experience, it is channels 1 and 2 mapped to the left and 3 and 4 mapped to the right. It does vary per receiver though.

    It will work with one but you'll only have one direction of control. I guess you could try re-soldering the pad to the board (the pad looks to be just solder itself)

    So long as it is a signal pad as per the link Scottie posted, it is OK. It will influcence which channel is the forwards/backwards and which one is the side to side channel though.
